Secret Burial Single Accidentally Sold by Toronto's Sonic Boom Records
Published Nov 28, 2016Surprise! The details of a new two-song 12-inch from shadowy electronic artist Burial have emerged, although the record technically hasn't been officially released (or even announced). Rather, a few copies were "accidentally" sold on Black Friday (November 25) at Toronto store Sonic Boom Records.
The record features two tracks: "Young Death" is on the A-side and "Nightmarket" is on the B-side. It comes via Hyperdub, and is Burial's first solo release of the year (although he did collaborate with Zomby). Photos of the simple black sleeve can be seen in a Discogs listing.
So how exactly did the single emerge? According to Sonic Boom record buyer Blair Whatmore, the store was sent a box of Burial records. He told Pitchfork, "We assumed it was a Black Friday secret listing. It wasn't really clear to us that we weren't supposed to be selling it." The store "accidentally" sold five copies. Someone from Hyperdub called the store the next day (November 26) and was "not happy."
It's unclear exactly what the release plan for these songs is, although a couple of Discogs commenters have said that the record will be out widely this Wednesday (November 30).
UPDATE (11/28, 9 a.m. EST): The "Young Death"/"Nightmarket" single has now been released digitally through Hyperdub. Stream both tracks in the player below.
